Purpose

Students will acquire an understanding of the child and early intervention in the context of:

The family and home environment

Peer relationships

The child care and educational setting

The family and the community

Collaboration between environments around the child

Key concepts

Interactional nature of parent-child relationship and its impact on development

The proximal environment and its impact on development and learning

Peer relationships and peer culture and the relation to child development and learning

The role of formal and informal support in promoting child development, well-being and quality of life

Participation and related concepts

Content

Models of understanding the parent-child relationship

Peer relationships and peer culture

Formal and informal support

The nature of inclusion – the implementation of inclusive environments

The effects of environments on participation

Models of collaboration

Assignment

Develop a paper on one of the key concepts. The paper should address the concept on the basis of observational data or assessment information that is gathered by the student in collaboration with parents and early interventionists.

Field Experiences

- Spend a day with a family with a child with special needs
- Visit a program that supports parents to learn about services and activities offered
- Visit a hospital or clinic to see how families are supported when their child is treated for a crises or chronic condition
- Observe how families are involved in the assessment and evaluation of their child’s special needs
- Visit a child care program or preschool to observe children’s play and interactions in that setting; interview the teacher about facilitating peer interaction in that setting with particular attention to children with special needs
