Purpose
The student will acquire an understanding of:
The theoretical basis for child development and early intervention
Conceptualization of functioning, disability and risk in children
Universal constructs and models in early childhood intervention
Developing and implementing intervention programs

Functioning and disability in childhood
Models and constructs in early development
Early childhood intervention in different countries and cultures
The prevention paradigm- assumptions, strategies and evidence
The intervention process and assessment
Assignment
Develop a paper where you:
Use theoretical constructs basis for how child development as viewed in your country
Describe the perception of disability, inclusion, participation and quality of life in your country in the context of the early childhood intervention with special focus on how the socio-political context affects early intervention.
Compare the ICF-system of classification with how your country identifies children with disabilities.
Work with a partner (via internet or in class, 3-4 different countries) for cross national comparisons. Develop a presentation for the class that covers the following topics, comparing the countries:
- Definitions of “risk”
- Definitions of disability
- “Seamlessness” of services provided to each
- Barriers that exist both vertically (as children age) and horizontally (among the various places in which children exist)
Field Assignments
- Visit an early intervention program to determine the models used
- Interview two early interventionists and two parents of children with disabilities in regard to their views on active participation
